House on Haunted Hill

Hey everyone I don't think I've reviewed many scary movies so why don't I review this one. It is directed by William Castle (who is famous for making movies with gimmicks) and stars Vincent Price so this should be pretty good. It's a dark and stormy night so let's review House on Haunted Hill.

A man named Watson Prichard (Elisha Cook) tells the audience that he is the owner of a house he belives to be haunted. A eccentric millionare named Frderick Loren (Vincent Price) and his wife Annabelle (Carol Ohmart) rent the house to host a party. He invites Mr. Prichard, a jet pilot named Lance Schroeder (Richard Long), a psychiatrist named Dr. David Trent (Alan Marshall), one of Mr. Loren's employees named Norah Manning (Carolyn Craig), and a newspaper wrter named Ruth Bridgers (Julie Michum). They all arive at the house and find that their host is nowhere to be found. After a chandelier falls and almost hits one of the guests Mr. and Mrs. Loren show up and welcome them to the party. He says that after midnight they will be locked inside the house. Mr. Prichard tours them around the house and shows them the wine cellar where there is a vat of acid in the middle. Lance and Norah look around the cellar and Lance gets locked in a room. When the rest of them find hi he had been hit in the head very hard.

Lace says he must have bumped his head against the wall. However Lance and Norah go down stairs to the cellar again and look in the room where Lance bumped his head Norah sees what appears to be a ghost of an old woman but no one believes her.  Norah goes up to her room and an old man tells her to leave before it`s to late. It turns out that the ghost in the basement and the old man are just the caretakers of the mansion but they end up locking everyone in the house meaning that nobody can leave. To make things interesting Mr. Loren gives everyone guns. OK we are about halfway into this  murder mystery horror movie and we haven`t seen any ghosts and nobody is dead....kind of a misleading description. Everyone is looking around the house but then they realize that Norah is missing. But there is no time to worry about that because then Anabelle turns up dead and it looks like somebody hung her. Lance finds Norah and says someone tried to kill her so Lance hides her in his room while the rest go downstairs to descuss what is happening.

***SPOILER ALERT STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE END RUINED***

They all make the decision to stay in their rooms and not leave for the entire night. But Norah sees the ghost of Annabelle at her window which causes her to snap and leave her room. Dr. Trent sees Norah and tells Mr. Loren that she is heading down to the basement. It turns out that Annabelle isn't dead and that she and Dr. Trent are working together to kill Mr. Loren. Mr. Loren heads into the basement where Norah accidently shoots him and kills him. Dr. Trent tries dumps his body into the vat of acid. Before we sees him being dumped we cut to Annabell going into the basment and and sees Mr. Loren's living skeleton which causes her to walk into the vat of acid. It turns out that the skeleton was just a puppet and that Mr. Loren used a bullet proof vest and tossed Dr. Trent into the vat of acid. So there weren't any ghost the whole time...or were there? The End.

House on Haunted Hill is a very silly movie. With over the top acting and bad special effects it doesn't hold up well now adays. The whole thing felt like an episode of Scooby Doo but it was all very hilarious to watch. Now there are some jump scares so I wouldn't recomend showing it to small children. But if you want a silly mystery this movie is for you. See you next time.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) PosterI don't think I review enough Disney live action movies. It took me a while to find a good one, but I finally found a winner. So here is the classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

The movie starts with a boy named Nick (Robert Oliveri) and his sister Amy (Amy O'Neil) who's father Wayne (Rick Moranis) is working on a machine that makes stuff smaller. But all it is able to do right now is blow things up. Meanwhile their neighbors the Thompson's are going on a fishing trip. Ron Thompson (Jared Rushton) knocks a baseball through the window where the invention is which messes with the circuits and somehow. Ron's brother Russ (Thomas Brown) makes him go to their house to get the ball. But they all stand in the path of the shrink ray and they end up getting shrunk. Just then Wayne decides to sweep the floor and they all end up in the trash bag. They escape the bag only to find themselves on the other side of the backyard and now they have to get to the house.

They come up with the idea of calling their dog but they attract a bunch of bees and they get separated.Wayne figures out what happened walks around on stilts but accidentally ends up activating the sprinklers which to the kids is like a huge flood. The sprinklers stops and the kids find an ant and they decide to ride him to get home faster. Wayne is now using a machine to suspend himself above the grass to avoid crushing the kids and all his neighbours are giving him weird looks. The kids decide to spend the night inside of a Lego brick. In the morning Wayne tells his wife what happened and now they are both using the hovering rig to look through the grass. Meanwhile the kids are                                                                                                 attacked by a scorpion.

The Ant defeats the scorpion and they see that the dog is now in the lawn. They ride the dog into the house and Nick lands into Wayne's cereal. Wayne sees him before he eats Nick and he takes them  up to his lab to fix them. The neighbours decide that he should test it on them first to make sure that it won't blow the children into tiny pieces. The machine works and the kids are returned to normal. The shrink ray is finally perfected and becomes a great scientific device. The End.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a great movie. The effects actually hold up really well especially seeing as it was made in 1989. In fact I would even say these effects are better than some CGI in movies I have seen. The acting is really good and some of them give really funny performances. So Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is an excellent family film I recommend.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Roald Dahl books always seem to get movie adaptations. From Matilda, to The Witches, to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. So making a movie out of Fantastic Mr. Fox seemed like a natural move. So let's get started in my review of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

The film opens in what I am assuming is somewhere in North America in the year......something, where we see Mr. Fox (George Clooney) and Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep) walking home but Mr. Fox decides to take a short cut home through a local bird farm where he steals some birds but they end up getting trapped. Cut to two years later (twelve fox years) where we see they escaped the trap and they have a son named Ash (Jason Schwartzman). Mr. Fox has given up bird stealing and has started writing a newspaper column. He is also in the market for a new house. He is looking at a big tree on a hill as his new home where he meats the building super Kylie the opossum (Wallace Wolodarsky). Mr. Fox consults his lawyer, Badger (Bill Murray), who says that the house is located right next to the farms of three of the most dangerous farmers, Walter Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Nathan Bunce (Hugo Guinness), and Franklin Bean (Michael Gambon) Despite this Fox goes ahead and buys the house. Mean while Fox's nephew Kristofferson (Eric Chase Anderson) comes to visit them.

Now that they have moved near three of the most dangerous farmers Mr. Fox wants to get back in the business of stealing from farmers with the help of Kylie. First they break into Boggis' chicken farm and steal several chickens, then they break into Bunce's goose farm, and finally Bean's apple cider cellar. The farmers catch on to what's going on and they decide to shoot Mr. Fox. They only end up shooting off his tail and then they decide to buy some construction equipment and dig up the tree. The Fox Family dig an escape tunnel and hide out underground. It turns out that the construction equipment drove a lot of animals underground as well but Fox comes up with a plan. They tunnel their way to a flint mine to hide out in, but on the way they steal all the food from the three farms. When the farmers find out that they're farms have been robbed again, they get really mad and come up with a new plan. Meanwhile Ash and Kristofferson try to steal Mr.Fox's tail back but they find out that it isn't in the house and that Bean is wearing it as a tie so they try to escape but Kristofferson is captured.

***SPOILER ALERT STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE END RUINED***

Mr. Fox comes up with a rescue plan. First he writes the farmers a note saying that we will surrender himself if they give back Kristofferson. But it turns out he sets up a trap where the other animals throw flaming pine cones at the farmers to create a distraction while Fox, Kylie, and Ash steal a motorcycle and head to where Kristofferson is being held. They break in only to be confronted by a rabbid beagle which Mr. Fox distracts while Ash tries to break Kristofferson out. The farmers catch up only to be chased away by their own beagle. They Fox Family along with the rest of the animals now live in the sewer and they have plenty of food due to a secret entrance under a super market. The End.

This is a great movie. The animation is pretty good and it has some of the best stop motion water. The actors all seem to be good in their parts and it is a very funny movie. So all in all I do recommend this movie. See you next time.

Shorts Package: The Pink Panther

It's seems like it has been a while since I did one of these so I guess I will do another one. I will be looking at shorts starring The Pink Panther.

We Give Pink Stamps
The Pink Panther is living in a mall when he sees a janitor and tries to hide from him. The janitor sees glimpses of him making him more and more paranoid. The funniest part of this episode is the janitor's growing paranoia. There is also kind of a funny twist at the end involving a tiger rug but I won't give it away. On to the next episode.

The Pink Pill
The Pink Panther gets sent to the hospital after a mannequin falls on top of him. He ironically ends up getting more injured while he is there. One of the best parts is where he falls out of a window while a nurse is checking his blood pressure (I won't say how but it is in a very funny way).

Pink Blue Plate
The Pink Panther gets a job working at a diner next to a construction site. He keeps messing up orders which makes one construction worker as well as his boss angrier and angrier. It all builds up to a very funny ending after Pink ends up throwing a blueberry pie in the construction workers face.

The Pink Panther is a very funny show and you should definitely go and check it out if you want a good laugh. See you next week for another new review
