Paddington

Paddington (2014) PosterHey, do you like bears? You do? Let's review Paddington. The movie is based on a popular series of children's books of the same name which I have never read but I'm sure I'm qualified to review this movie. So let's venture into darkest Peru as I review Paddington.

We open in the year 1950 something (probably) where we see an explorer (Tim Downie) exploring Peru where he finds an intelligent race of bears that he introduces to modern culture. He names them Lucy (Imelda Staunton) and Pastuzo (Michael Gambon). Years later they have a nephew named Paddington (Ben Whishaw) who among other things enjoys eating marmalade. One day there is a earthquake in the jungle which destroys their house and Pastuzo doesn't make it out. Lucy sends Paddington to London on a boat while she stays in Peru to go to The Home For Retired Bears. Paddington makes it to London surviving by eating all his Marmalade, and he hops into a mail bag where he is dropped off at a subway station. He meets a family named the Browns, Henry the father (Hugh Bonneville) Mary, the mother (Sally Hawkins) and the children Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Jonathan (Samuel Joslin). Henry is hesitant about taking care of Paddington but they decide to tale care of him for the night.

Meanwhile a woman with an obsession for finding Paddington named Millicent (Nicole Kidman) finds out that Paddington is in London. The next day Paddington and Mary decide to find the Explorer by taking Paddington's hat that was given to his uncle by the explorer to an antique shop. The owner of the antique shop named Mr. Gruber (Jim Broadbent) is inspecting the hat when Paddington notices a pick pocket (Matt King) and chases after him. After catching the thief Paddington makes it back to the shop where Mr. Gruber tells Paddington that the hat belongs to The Geographers Guild. So later Henry and Paddington sneak into The Geographers Guild where they find a film about the explorer's expedition to Peru. They watch the film and find out the the explorer's name is Montgomery Clyde. So while the rest of the Family is out Paddington looks through the phone book to find all the M. Clydes. But while Paddington is looking at the phone book Millicent breaks into the house and ends up setting it on fire but doesn't get Paddington. Fortunately the fire doesn't damage too much. The family thinks that Paddington set the house on fire and decides it's time for him to leave. So Paddington leaves and goes looking for Montgomery Clyde.

***SPOILER ALERT STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE END RUINED***

He goes through all the names on the list and there is only one left. Which turns out is Montgomery's daughter, Millicent Clyde (cue dramatic music). It turns out that Montgomery was fired from The Geographers Guild because he didn't collect a specimen, so Millicent devoted her life to catching the species of bears that her father found. The Browns find out that Paddington has been kidnapped, so they with the help of their maid Mrs. Bird (Julia Walters) break into the mueseam to save Paddington. Paddington escapes, Millicent is arrested, and Paddington stays with the Browns and has a happy time. The End

***SPOILERS OVER KEEP READING***

Paddington is a great movie. It is very funny and the actors are very funny in their parts and of course Paddington is very adorable. The only problem I have is that Millicent is a bit of a copy of Cruella De Ville from 101 Dalmations. But you should definitely see this movie while it is still in theaters. See you next time.
